GENERAL INTRODUCTION

The performance parameters contained in this specification are intended for application to pulsed radars of various types. The major performance parameter which defines the operational capability of the radar is the Performance Index which takes into account other factors which have an effect on the ability of specific equipment to detect a target at specified ranges.

Additionally account is taken of intervening precipitation when assessing the range performance. Factors are give for various frequencies and two typical precipitation conditions, 300 mm per hour x nautical miles of range and 60 mm per hour x nautical miles of range.

The Performance Index enables radars of varying degrees of capability to be approved on the basis of compliance with a declared value. Subsequent operational use of the radar may then be determined in relation to the speed characteristic of the aircraft type in which it may be installed.

It is recognized that operationally acceptable radars may employ techniques not covered in this document.

Mandatory clauses are invariably denoted by the use of "shall".
