Development and Validation of a Fan Performance Model for Typical Packaged HVAC Systems

INTRODUCTION

Fan performance characteristics, especially fan power consumption, is critical for the investigation of the HVAC system operations optimization and energy saving strategies. Simulation software, such as DOE-2, HAP, eQUEST, assume that: (1) each fan operates on a single system curve that uniquely maps airflow to static pressure; (2) fan system efficiency is a direct function of airflow; (3) and a second-order equation sufficiently models both of these effects. A blackbox regression model is used, producing the fan system power draw as a function of the percent design airflow using a second-order equation.
