IWSM CONFIGURATION MANAGEMENT IMPLEMENTATION GUIDE

INTRODUCTION

This guide has been developed to assist in understanding the critical configuration Management (CM) concepts, processes, and policies to be implemented under Integrated Weapon Systems Management (IWSM). It provides for uniform implementation of the CM critical processes throughout the Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC), and should be used in conjunction with the IWSM Implementation Guide (AFMC Pamphlet 800-60). This is an interim guide and eventually will be included as part of the Handbooks associated with MIL-STDs-499 and-973.

The major barriers to defining and implementing a common AFMC IWSM cm process were

• No common language

• Different Technical Baseline definitions

• Inconsistent practices for implementing Configuration Control Boards (CCBs) and

• Interface Management (IM)

The resolution of these barriers and the resulting new concepts, processes, and policies are addressed in this guide. New tools and procedures have been incorporated into the Systems Engineering/Configuration Management (SE/CM) process to provide for more effective system life cycle management. These new practices/processes are enhancements that include the development of common terminology and standard definitions, which expand the Technical Baseline definition to include not just data needed for development, but all data necessary for life cycle support. Configuration control for systems and commodities has been improved through the application of a consistent definition of CCBs and IM across the Command.
