ABSTRACT

The test material, API #78-1,New Composite Motor Oil, was tested for potential acute toxicity, using a battery of six tests: Primary Skin Irritation, Primary Eye Irritation, Skin Sensitization, Acute Dermal Toxicity. Acute Oral Toxicity, and Sub acute Dermal Toxicity. Materials, methods, and results of individual tests are presented in this report.

The test material was found to produce slight primary skin irritation. Likewise, when the test material was tested for acute dermal and sub acute dermal toxicity, results showed skin irritation and dermal corrosion, respectively. No signs of systemic toxicity, however, were observed for either test, but histopathologic examination determined accompanying dermal toxicity. The oral median lethal dose, i.e., oral LD_50, was greater than 25 m1/kg. The test material produced practically no primary eye irritation and was found to be non-sensitizing.
