scope:
The purpose of this document is to establish recommendations for testing and evaluating the performance of rotary shouldered connection thread compounds with regard to ability to inhibit uncontrolled makeup, and maintain acceptable stress levels and circumferential makeup of rotary shouldered tool joints. This document is intended to formulate standard minimum and maximum limits of performance acceptability regardless of the chemical composition or base metal constituents of a specific thread compounds.
This document outlines a general procedure for thread compound testing and evaluation; describes the components, calibration and operation of a suitable test apparatus; and defines criteria for acceptable thread compound performance. Acceptable thread compound performance during testing and evaluation does not guarantee failure-free rotary shouldered connection service in the field, but rather serves to identify those compounds most likely to enhance rotary shouldered connection service life and reduce the possibility of operational failures.
