This standard applies to two types of middle distillate fuel, Type 11 and Type 15, that are suitable for marine (naval) applications such as gas turbine power plants, high-speed and medium-speed internal combustion engines of the compression-ignition type, and boilers. Fuel produced to this standard is not intended for use in aircraft turbine engines.

Type 11 is intended for equipment operating at an ambient temperature of -1°C or above. This grade is the primary fuel for naval requirements. Type 151 is intended for use in equipment operating at an ambient temperature above -12°C.
