scope:
The purpose of this International Standard is to standardize and promote internationally the use of numbers on printed music publications in order that one edition of a title or one separate component of an edition can be destinguished from all other editions or components by means of a unique international standard music number. It specifies the construction and the location of an ISMN. It is applicable to printed music publications, whether for sale, hire, free or for copyright purposes only. It shall not be used for separate material in other media where ISO 3901 is applied.
