This Japanese Industrial Standard specifies the required performance of precast concrete products (hereafter referred to as "products") and verification methods thereof. However, this Standard shall not be applied to individual concrete products for buildings which are specified in separate Japanese Industrial Standards.

In addition, the comparison table between the previous and current editions of this Standard on technically significant revisions is given in Annex A.

NOTE: This Standard should, principally, only specify the performance of products. However, the characteristic of usage of these products inevitably necessitates discussion of the performance of the structure for which they are intended, and so the performance of the structures is mentioned in some parts of this Standard. However, the relations of products and the structures for which they are used can vary widely: a product can be the structure by itself; a product can be a part of the structure; a combination of several products can constitute the structure, etc. In some of the relations, the performance of the structure need not be separately considered. If focusing on the design of the structure, the sequence to be followed is that the design of the structure is first developed so as to satisfy certain requirements, and then based on this design, the related products to constitute the structure are designed and manufactured. In this case, the purchaser would first present the performance requirements for the structure and the product, and the producer would design the product and the structure accordingly, verify their performance, and manufacture them. In actual general trading, however, the producers would design the products in advance based on the general anticipation of how the structure and the product would be used, and sell the so manufactured products by identifying the recommended specification or organization standard by which the performance of the product has been verified. In this case, the purchaser would select, from multiple choices of products, the one which would satisfy the required performance of the structure.
