This specification covers the adhesion performance requirements of an adhesive backed foam which is bonded to painted or unpainted metal, plastic or glass. It may also be used for other light trim bonded with pressure sensitive adhesive. Additional notes may be needed to specifically define the bonding application.

Material Description. Foams can be open or closed cell of varying polymer technologies. The adhesives of these pressure sensitive with a release liner. The construction can be applied on a component and shipped Part of Assembly (POA) or delivered as a separate part for installation at a GM Assembly Center. The following types of bonding performance for adhesive backed foam are covered in this specification.

Symbols. Not applicable.

Typical Applications. Typical applications include under foam gaskets, hood muckets, foam dams for windshields and Air Inlet Panels (AIP) and general air, dust and water seals such as seals and close-outs in lighting. See GMW15473 for specific definition and release of foam technology.

Type Performance. The following types are based upon adhesive performance

Type I. An adhesive backed foam composite that is entrapped and/or mechanically retained for the life of the vehicle. The adhesive of this type is functional prior to and during installation or until such time when the foam is entrapped and/or mechanically retained down line from the installed location.

Type II. An adhesive backed foam composite that is retained by the adhesive for the life of the vehicle.
