This section covers the application, selection, and installation of area safety monitors commonly used in petroleum refineries for (1) toxic gas analysis, (2) combustible gas analysis, and (3) fire and smoke detection. Portable analyzers and instruments whose primary function is laboratory analysis are not discussed. Refer to RP 550, Part I, Section 13, for alarm systems actuated by these area monitors.
