This AP covers the description and use of the standard bar codes used by NATO. It includes the linear symbologies Code 39, Code 128 and GS1-128. It also includes the two-dimensional (2D) symbologies PDF 417, Data Matrix and MaxiCode. The symbology standards for each bar code are noted in the related document list, Annex I. Additionally brief descriptions of the EAN-UPC and ITF-14 (interleaved two of five) symbologies are included for information. The orientation and placement of barcode symbols are specified in STANAG 4281 and 2494 or other specific NATO application standards as appropriate.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this agreement is to standardize, for the use of NATO forces, Standard NATO bar code Symbologies (SNS) for marking materiel, containers, and documentation by means of printed automatic identification symbologies.
