AWS - Chapter 13 - Soldering

Organization: AWS
Publication Date: 1 January 2004
Page Count: 36
scope:

Soldering is a joining technique that has been used since ancient times. Many artifacts discovered in archeological excavations were found to have been joined by soldering. The technology has existed for several thousand years, with innovative changes occurring as metallurgical knowledge and new metals were developed. Copper and lead alloys were the first base metals to be joined. Early metallurgists learned to identify lowmelting eutectics in binary systems, which permitted the soldering of complex shapes for jewelry and utensil applications. The industrial revolution promoted widespread use of soldered joints. It is interesting to note that this ancient joining method is used today at the highest levels of technology. Advancements in solder compositions, processing techniques, and applications have continued in many industrial applications such as microelectronics, telecommunications, automotive, aerospace, plumbing, and decorative packaging. Many soldering processes, procedures, filler metals, and types of equipment are used to join numerous base materials. Specific applications require consideration of all of these factors to obtain the optimum manufacturing and service results. This chapter presents an overview of soldering technology. It covers soldering principles and practices in some detail. Topics include the fundamentals of soldering, the various soldering processes, equipment, materials and consumables, basic operating procedures, inspection and quality, economics, and safe practices. Sources of additional information are suggested in the Supplementary Reading List at the end of the chapter
