Methods are provided to deal with the combination of sound pressure levels in decibels. Firstly, for the case when several sources are acting together a method of addition is given to estimate the combined sound pressure level in dB from all the sources. Secondly, for the measurement of sound pressure level from the sound source acting in the presence of background noise, subtraction of the levels is used to provide a corrected sound pressure level for the considered sound source.
