EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This report was prepared under the direction of Task Force W-19, API Environmental Affairs Department, with the assistance of its contractor. Engineering Sciences, Inc. (ES), and the cooperation of 15 member companies of the American Petroleum Institute. It presents the results of a survey of the physical and operating characteristics of 76 petroleum marketing terminals and of the oil and grease content in their wastewater discharges. The survey was made to obtain a data base which could be used to recommend oil and grease limits achievable for marketing terminals using best practicable control technology currently available (BPCTCA).

The W-19 survey was conducted from January 2, 1975, through April 30, 1975. The terminals involved represent a cross-section of marketing terminals of the participating companies with respect to physical characteristics and location, These terminals can also be labeled the "best performers" within the industry, in that they employed good housekeeping practices and used gravity oil-water separators or their equivalent as the minimum treatment technology.
