Introduction
This standard prescribes specifications for two types of physical specimens of surface roughness and lay. These types are-distinct from each other in use, and are intended for different purposes.
Part I of this standard gives specifications for surfaces intended as precision reference specimens of roughness height. Their primary use is for checking the calibration of instruments for measuring surface roughness. They are not intended to have the appearance or characteristics of commonly produced surfaces, nor are they intended for use in visual or tactual comparisions.
Part II of this standard Rives specifications for surface finish specimens intended to illustrate commonly used machined surfaces, embracing a range of roughness values and methods of manufacture. They are intended for illustrative use in determining roughness specifications, and for control of surface roughness where visual and tactual comparisons are adequate.
