PART 1 of the Manual discusses the application of statistical methods to the problem of: (a) summarizing the information contained in a sample of observations and (b) presenting the essential information in a concise form more readily interpretable than the unorganized mass of original data.

Attention will be directed particularly to quantitative information on measurable characteristics of materials and manufactured products. Such characteristics will be termed quality characteristics.
