INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this Investigation was to determine whether certain low boiling petroleum fractions have initiating and/or promoting activity In the mouse skin bioassay. In addition, the study was designed to detect whether the samples may facilitate carcinogenesis In a cocarcinogenic manner other than by classical promotion.
The following experiments were utilized to characterize the carcinogenic nature of the low boiling fractions:
1. Long-term mouse skin painting was employed to determine the carcinogenic potency of each sample.
2. Each sample was used as an initiator followed by promotion with a well established promoter.
3. After initiation with a well established Initiator each sample was then used as a promoter.
4. For cocarcinogenic evaluations each sample was tested concurrently with an Initiator and a promoter.
Besides evaluating the neoplastic and non-neoplastic skin lesions induced by the various treatments, the pathologic lesions of Internal organs were also assessed.
