This standard applies to compression tests at room temperature on any metallic material and serves to assess the strength and deformation behaviour of the material under test. For this purpose, a cylindrical compression test piece with a given original cross-sectional area S_o is steadily loaded, during which the resulting compressive force and compressive strain are measured.

This standard defines how the stress/strain behaviour and resulting material properties are determined.

Particular specifications or test standards may apply for certain materials or products. In such cases, these specifications shall be complied with or testing is to be carried out according to the respective standard.
