scope:

The purpose of this document is to allow users to determine the fine fraction with the calculation method. It also describes the assumptions and preconditions to be met in order for this method to be valid. This calculation method is applicable only after experiments have shown that the results are accurate and consistently equal or higher than the results from sedimentation, as described in Part 2, for that particular bulk material. For preparation of the sample and determination of crystalline silica by XRD and FTIR the users can refer to Part 1. An informative annex describes a specific method for the evaluation of the FF recommended for diatomaceous earth bulk materials. Due to the internal porosity of diatomaceous earth, the general instructions given in this part of the standard are adapted in order to take into account the material's effective density. This document is applicable for bulk materials that contain particles in the size range from 0,1 μm to 125 μm satisfying with the criteria given in this part and Part 2. The current industrial minerals within the scope of this method are: quartz, clay, kaolin, talc, feldspar, mica, cristobalite, vermiculite, diatomaceous earth, barite and andalusite. The method may be applicable to other bulk materials, following full investigation and validation.
