In the compilation of the series of standards VDI 4494, care has been taken to scrutinise and describe the contents from the view of both potential project clients and project contractors, for wide variety of logistics projects.
Outsourcing covers a defined period, in which the potential placement of performance contents with a third provider is considered and its effects estimated. In this framework, the client company must identify the performance contents to assign, call for tenders and award the contract to an external company who is then responsible for executing the outsourced activity.
Performance contents consist of activities in all areas along the supply chain from procurement up to delivery to the client as well as in the fields of spares and returned goods. The performance contents are individually assigned to each company and project, depending on the scope of outsourcing. This is accompanied by a change in the client's depth of performance (, p. 382).
The aim of outsourcing is defined in this series of standards as the optimisation of the supply of goods in due consideration of the profitability and quality of the activities and a defined period of partnership with an external partner (see Section 6).
