Purpose.

This publication provides Air Force guidance for the management of the Air Force nuclear mission, assigns specific responsibilities, and establishes relationships among Air Force organizations for its efficient and effective operation. This instruction also defines key functions of the Air Force nuclear mission and provides guidance for Air Force nuclear governing bodies. Air Force nuclear mission roles and responsibilities, key functions, and governing bodies were removed from AFPD 13-5 and included in this publication. Nuclear Mission Assessments have been added as a result of Congress signing Title 10 United States Code (USC) § 8040, Oversight of Nuclear Deterrence Mission, into law.
