Open Architecture

The GVA approach underpins the achievement of the MoD Open Architecture Key User Requirement (KUR) for land vehicles and is based upon established systems engineering principles which emphasise the need to take a whole enterprise, whole systems and whole life view.

GVA Approach

The GVA approach mandates the use of open standards for physical, electrical and data interfaces. It also mandates a crew-centric approach to vehicle design based upon a common multifunctional crew station, the GVA Human Machine Interface (HMI). This standardised HMI will enable platform sub-systems to be controlled through standardised display layouts and input devices. GVA is aimed at reducing sub-system integration risk, time and therefore cost, and the training and cognitive burden of having dissimilar interfaces across vehicles.

A key objective of GVA is to fundamentally change the way vehicle mission systems are designed and procured. The historic approach is to deliver each sub system as a separate stand-alone sub-system with its own infrastructure, services and displays and controls.

There are significant disadvantages with this approach such as, multiple controls and displays, duplicated infrastructure and services, costly and difficult systems integrations, costly technology insertions, inability to realise future integrated data capabilities and high SWAP demands.

GVA aims to ensure that future vehicle mission systems are integrated onto core platform infrastructure, re-using and sharing as many features as possible, with information displayed and subsystems controlled from a common multifunction crew interface.

Moving to an integrated system operating across a standardised databus brings a host of benefits such as common controls and displays, common infrastructure and re-useable services, faster and cheaper systems integration, faster and cheaper technology insertions, ability to provide fused data capabilities, and significantly lower SWAP demands through fewer components.
