This technical report addresses the electromagnetic environment of telecommunications equipment that is used by telecommunications service providers. This equipment is under the control of the service provider and is either located on the service providers side of the point of demarcation, or is part of the point of demarcation.

Examples include network telecommunications equipment placed in locations such as Central Offices (COs), Electronic Equipment Enclosures (EEEs), Electronic Equipment Cabinets (EECs), the outside plant (OSP), and at the customer premises. Examples of EEE's are Controlled Environmental Vaults (CEV's), and huts.

Purpose

The purpose of this technical report is to help identify and describe the electromagnetic compatibility issues that may be encountered by network telecommunications equipment in various network environments.

Application

This document describes threats to the telecommunication networks including ESD, EMI (both emissions and susceptibility), Lightning, Power Induction (transient and steady state), Power Contact, Corrosion, and DC Power.

Although some of the concerns may overlap, this technical report is not generally intended for consumer owned telecommunications equipment. Nor is this technical report generally intended to apply to test equipment, portable computers, or other nontelecommunications equipment.
