This Standard describes and establishes the lot numbering system and the lot number markings that will be used to identify ammunition and explosive material.

Purpose. The purpose of lot numbering of ammunition outlined herein is to provide the identification of material necessary to assure accurate control of the movements of items during the transfer from production line to production line, from plant to plant, from plant to storage magazine, for issue to the using services, to conserve and maintain surveillance records and to provide a means 'of withdrawing defective, deteriorated, hazardous, or obsolete ammunition and explosive material from service.
