This standard applied to determine the residue on ignition of plastic, elastomers, plastic film, coatings on leathercloths, cardboard, paper, sealing materials etc.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this standard is to determine the residue on ignition of material used for automobile. Three methods of test are described.

Method A : which determines the ash content by direct ignition without the separate chemical process - shall be used on halogen free materials.

Method B : which determines the ash content by sulphation i.e. chemical decomposition by sulphuric acid followed by ignition - shall be used on all halogen containing polymers except fluoro polymers.

Neither method is suitable for determining the residue on ignition of silicones and fluoro polymers.
