General
Since the fire at King's Cross, LU has made radical improvements to reduce the risk from fire on the Underground. Smoking is not permitted on stations or trains, there are now automatic smoke and heat detectors, directly linked to sprinkler systems installed at Underground stations. LU has also adopted the most stringent standards in the world for the fire resistance of materials used at stations and in trains. LU has also developed well-practised procedures for fire alerts, with the evacuation of customers from stations normally being completed prior to the arrival of the Fire Brigade.
A fire alert can be either from an automatic heat or smoke detector, a call point operation or from a personal report of suspicion of the smell of smoke or signs of fire. LU does not rely upon the Fire Brigade for evacuation.
