This Standard covers requirements for external corrosion protection systems on steel non-pressure tanks that are used for the underground storage of flammable liquids and combustible liquids. The requirements are as follows:
A Section 5. covers external corrosion protection using sacrificial anodes, electrical isolation and thin film dielectric coating (cathodically protected tank);
B Section 6. covers external corrosion protection using dielectric fibre reinforced plastics or resins that are bonded to the tank (composite tank - clad);
C Section 7. covers external corrosion protection and secondary containment using dielectric jackets (jacketed tanks); and
NOTE: Jacketed tanks as described in this Standard are also considered to be double walled.
D Section 8. covers external corrosion protection using polyurethane (coated tanks).
These external corrosion protection systems are intended to be installed, operated and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
These requirements cover external corrosion protection systems for steel tanks manufactured in accordance with the applicable requirements of ULC-S603, Standard for Steel Underground Tanks for Flammable and Combustible Liquids, which are used for the underground storage of flammable liquids and combustible liquids that are compatible with the materials of construction.
In addition to meeting the construction and performance requirements contained in ULC-S603, Standard for Steel Underground Tanks for Flammable and Combustible Liquids, construction of corrosion protected steel Underground Tanks shall comply with the applicable requirements of this Standard.
This Standard does not cover requirements for the installation, maintenance and use of the tank. Tanks covered by these requirements are intended for installation and use in accordance with other documents including but not limited to:
A CCME Environmental Code of Practice for Aboveground and Underground Storage Tank Systems Containing Petroleum Products and Allied Petroleum Products;
B The National Fire Code of Canada; and
C Regulations of the appropriate authority having jurisdiction.
NOTE: Appendices A, Installation Instructions (Informative), and B (Informative), Methods for Monitoring Cathodic Protected Tanks, are not mandatory requirements and are provided for information and guidance purposes only.
Where applicable, each tank with an external corrosion protection system shall be provided with a corrosion protection repair kit applicable to its technology and the manufacturer's application instructions, for use, if necessary, during the installation process. Where no repair kit is required under this Standard, the tank shall include a marking to state that the manufacturer shall be contacted should repair to the corrosion protection system be required during the installation process.
NOTE: Refer to Appendices A (Informative), Installation Instructions, and B (Informative), Methods for Monitoring Cathodic Protected Tanks, for recommended practices for installation and monitoring.
The manufacturer shall provide installation instructions with each tank assembly. Refer to Appendix A (Informative) Installation Instructions, for guidance.
