PURPOSE

The supplement provides guidelines and established procedures for controlling the release of hazardous energy. It also implements the requirements of OSHA regulations, 29 CRF 1910.147, Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout/Tagout), and 29 CRF 1926.417, Lockout and Tagout of Circuits. This supplement established the minimum requirements for lockout or tagout of hazardous energy during equipment installation, modifications, service, or maintenance in the Western Service Area. This supplement is to be used as a source of information to prevent the unexpected energizing, startup, release of stored energy, or sudden movement of equipment components. Typical hazardous energy sources found in Western Service Area include electrical, radiation, hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, and kinetic energy.
