scope:

This Specification applies to permanent and temporary Bridges on Railtrack infrastructure as follows:

• all Underline Bridges spanning roads or under which vehicular traffic may reasonably be expected to pass;

• all Underline Bridges spanning navigable waterways (except waterways navigable only by small pleasure craft);

• all Overline Bridges carrying roads or which may reasonably be expected to carry vehicular traffic.

Bridge Strikes by small pleasure craft and other small vessels, which are unlikely to cause damage to Bridges are excluded.

This Specification does not apply to the management of Bridge Strikes by rail vehicles or their loads or by rail mounted plant.

This Specification does not apply to the management of vehicle incursions onto Railtrack infrastructure, except where such incursions are as a consequence of the collision of a vehicle with the fabric of a Bridge.

PURPOSE

This Specification defines requirements for:

• management procedures to be followed to mitigate the risk from Bridge Strikes;

• procedures to be followed to enable trains to pass safely over or under a Bridge following a reported Bridge Strike;

• recording and reporting Bridge Strike incidents.

This Specification is compliant with Railway Group Standard GC/RT5122: Bridge Strikes from Road Vehicles and Waterborne Vessels.

This Specification is compliant with Railway Group Standard GE/RT8004: Local Operating Instructions in respect of Signal Box Special Instructions and Local Operating Instructions.

This Specification is compliant with Railway Group Standard GE/RT8047: Reporting of Safety Related Information in respect of Bridge Strikes.
