Application

This standard applies to electrical equipment, or parts of such equipment, for use in Class I and II, Division 2, and Class III, Divisions 1 and 2, hazardous (classified) locations.

Applicability of Other Standards

Except where modified by the requirements of this standard, nonincendive electrical equipment shall comply with the applicable requirements of ANSI/ISA-12.12.01, "Nonincendive Electrical Equipment for Use in Class I and II, Division 2 and Class III, Divisions 1 and 2 Hazardous (Classified) Locations".

Except where modified by the requirements of this standard, nonincendive electrical equipment shall comply with the applicable requirements for ordinary locations, in accordance with Clause 2.3 of Approval Standard 3600, "Electrical Equipment for Use In Hazardous (Classified) Locations - General Requirements".

Purpose

This standard serves as the basis for Approval of Nonincendive Electrical Equipment for use in Class I and II, Division 2, and Class III, Divisions 1 and 2, hazardous (classified) locations as defined in Articles 500, 501, 502 and 503 of the National Electrical Code^®, ANSI/NFPA-70 (NEC^®).

Approval criteria may include, but are not limited to, performance requirements, marking requirements, examination of manufacturing facility(ies), audit of quality assurance procedures, and a follow-up program.
