This document provides an overview on common knowledge related to the physical and biological fundamentals involved in the process of UV surface disinfection. It also discusses the application of UV disinfection in the scope of cleaning passenger aircraft cabins and aircraft interior compartments or parts thereof. Furthermore, it provides recommendations and guidance for adequately selecting process parameters such as wavelength, irradiance and guidance for adequately selecting process parameters such as wavelength, irradiance and exposure time. Particular consideration is given to harmful effects, such as hazards imposed to humans involved in the process and degradation of materials potentially caused by UV radiation.

This document does not cover the disinfection of air and potable water with UV-C.
