ANS - N18.5
Earthquake Instrumentation Criteria For Nuclear Power Plants
| Organization: | ANS |

scope:
This standard is intended for use at water cooled nuclear power plants and may be used for guidance, where appropriate, at other types of nuclear power plants. Earthquake instrumentation is specified for the site, structures, equipment, and piping. The kind and number of instruments required depend on the Safe Shutdown Earthquake Maximum Ground Acceleration designated for the plant.
This standard does not include the following:
1. Instrumentation to automatically shut down a nuclear power plant at a predetermined ground acceleration.
2. Instrumentation to specifically provide information which would increase knowledge and understanding of seismic design. The need for such instrumentation is the basis for ongoing research and development programs.
3. Methods of analysis of recorded data.
Purpose
The purpose of this standard is to define the minimum requirements for an earthquake instrumentation system to be installed at nuclear power plants in order to provide information on the input vibratory ground motion and resultant vibratory response of representative Category I (formerly seismic Class I) structures, equipment, and piping should an earthquake occur. By comparing this information with the vibratory motions used in the seismic design of the facility, an evaluation can be made as to whether or not the design vibratory motions have been exceeded.
