| Organization: | LUL |
| Publication Date: | 1 May 2021 |
| Status: | inactive |

scope:
This standard applies to all rail in running lines and depot entry lines only on LU.
It covers the following components of track:
a) running rails
b) points and crossings
c) adjustment and expansion switches.
This standard does not cover cast crossings (Austenitic Manganese Steel (AMS)), which shall be inspected in accordance with LU standard S1175 'Track - Inspection of Cast Crossings and Cast Vees'.
Note: The rail defect management practices in this standard have been designed to proactively identify defects and mitigate defects developing further through initial minimum actions until the defect can be removed.
Visual, ultrasonic, and rail surface crack measurement inspection techniques are utilised to prevent broken rails through early identification of critical defects in rails and fishplates.
Failure to detect defects will affect the overall safety of the railway, and may lead to incidents such as derailments, loss of service, damage of assets and injury or loss of life to staff or members of public.
Purpose
The purpose of this standard is to define the requirements for rail defect management of the track system.
Note: The content of this standard was previously covered in London Underground (LU) standard S1158 'Track Inspection and Maintenance'.
