scope:
The scope of the standard is to provide general principles for preparation of mobile units and offshore installations intended for operations in cold climate conditions. It covers functions, systems and equipment considered important to the safety of the vessel, personnel and the environment. Winterization is primarily focused on the adverse effects and control of cold temperatures, snow, freezing rain, sea spray and atmospheric icing on board the vessel.
Winterization measures include:
- protecting the vessel's functions, systems and equipment considered important to safety,
- provisioning suitable equipment and supplies, and
- implementing procedures for safe operation and personnel welfare.
This standard does not address those hull and machinery requirements necessary for safe navigation through sea ice, which are addressed in the relevant ice-class standards.
