scope:
This material specification applies to aluminum (Al) alloys for cast pistons. Aluminum casting alloys are specified by chemical composition and thermal treatment.
Note: Nothing in this standard supercedes applicable laws and regulations.
Note: In the event of conflict between the English and domestic language, the English language shall take precedence.
Purpose/Material Description.
The alloys listed in this specification are favored for pistons due to their strength and fatigue resistance at elevated temperatures. Principal alloying elements include Si, Cu, Ni, and Mg. Other elements may appear as trace elements or impurities, which can affect alloy cost and product properties.
Note: Silicon (Si), Copper (Cu), Nickel (Ni), Magnesium (Mg).
Symbols.
Not applicable.
Applicability.
The material grades listed in this specification are primarily applicable to cast aluminum pistons.
Remarks.
Refer to GMW5 for general information about other cast aluminum alloys (alloys not used for pistons) and correlation to international standards.
