This Standard specifies the requirements for free-cutting steels manufactured by adding sulfur to carbon steel, or by combining phosphorus and/or lead with sulfur (hereafter referred to as steels), especially in order to improve machinability. The steels include bars, wire rods and flat bars.

NOTE The International Standard corresponding to this Standard and the symbol of degree of correspondence are as follows.

ISO 683-4 : 2016 Heat-treatable steels, alloy steels and free-cutting steels - Part 4 : Free-cutting steels (MOD)

In addition, symbols which denote the degree of correspondence in the contents between the relevant International Standard and JIS are IDT (identical), MOD (modified), and NEQ (not equivalent) according to ISO/IEC Guide 21-1.
