Purpose
The IECC, as with the other International Codes® (I-Codes ®), is intended to be adopted as a legally enforceable document to provide a minimum level of energy conservation as well as safety and protection of public health, general welfare and property. Though not stated specifically, the code is applicable to all buildings and structures and their components and systems that use energy. The requirements in the IECC-Commercial chapters are specified individually for commercial buildings. The code addresses the design of energy-efficient building thermal envelopes and the selection and installation of energy-efficient mechanical, service water heating and illumination systems and equipment in commercial buildings. The code provides for consideration of alternative methods of compliance, including alternate and above code programs. The code details permitting and inspection provisions that work in concert with the IBC. In addition, this code provides for system commissioning, which works to analyze the longterm success of the energy efficiency building elements and installations.
