Three types of oils are available under the following classifications:
Classification NATO Code Type of Oil
STD O-156 Standard (Non-Corrosion Inhibiting)
C/I O-156/O-152 Corrosion Inhibiting
HTS O-156/O-154 High Thermal Stability
STD, C/I and HTS oils are fully interchangeable and can be mixed together in the same engine. However, C/I oils provide increased corrosion protection to engine bearings and components, while HTS oils provide added thermal protection and reduced deposition. Mixing of oils will diminish the desired feature and it will perform at the STD level. The U.S. Military has converted to the use of the C/I oil in order to take advantage of the increased protection afforded by this class of oil for normal use. The HTS oil is available for special applications if needed. STD oils will be acceptable for use in emergency situations, including top off of engines containing C/I or HTS oil, and international crossservicing.
