Ballast water management includes ballast water exchange and/or ballast water treatment. Ballast water exchange will be phased out with the installation of a ballast water treatment system in accordance with regulation B-3 of the BWM Convention.

This document provides technical requirements for design, documentation, installation, testing and operation of ballast water management operations and ballast water treatment systems.

Incorporated in the rules are design requirements from the IMO BWMS Code (MEPC.300(72)).
