The portable magazine covered by this specification is intended to provide stowage for shipboard ammunition and explosives (A&E) in accordance with NAVSEA OP 4. The portable magazine is to be installed in an area of the host ship that optimizes its installation, ship impact, and usefulness. If more than one magazine is to be installed aboard the host ship, it is intended that they be co-located and separated for segregation purposes. The portable magazine is intended for ships with and without organic A&E stowage facilities. The portable magazine is not intended for the stowage of ammunition or explosives that require jettison capability or for returning ordnance that cannot be safely returned to its original packaging for stowage. The portable magazine is not intended for the stowage of ordnance containing lithium batteries, chemical A&E, hypergolic propellants, and other fuel-air explosive ammunition. The portable magazine is not intended for use as a shipping container. A&E should not be stowed in the portable magazine unless the magazine is installed on the host ship and all magazine support systems are connected and operational. Equipment manufactured in accordance with this document may utilize new technology provided form, fit, and function are maintained as approved by the Technical Authority.
