ABSTRACT

A survey asking about IEQ preferences while studying and attending classes was given to 100 college students at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. The survey asked about preferred study and learning space characteristics, their propensity to use adaptive behavior in different situations, and options for possible learning and study spaces on campus. The results have indicated key factors, such as natural light, which are ideal conditions for learning and studying. In addition, the results show there is a significance difference for thermal sensation preference between men and women, and that the average preferred indoor condition is slightly cool (-0.53 on the thermal sensation scale). We will use the results and conclusions to inform the next stage of our research and the university for the design of new buildings, retrofitting old buildings, and determine ventilation strategies for older buildings that are not slated for retrofitting.
