Describes the Vehicle Identification Number which must be placed on trailers according to 49 CFR 565 and 571.115 (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 115.) This Recommended Practice does not cover every detail of the federal regulations. 49 CFR 565 and 571.115 should be referred to for the legal require-ments of the VIN. A sample VIN code format is shown, but other code formats may be equally acceptable.
