The scope of this document is to provide an introductory overview of obsolescence. Guidance on other obsolescence topics can be found in the guidance documents listed below:
a) G0043A Introduction to obsolescence - An introduction to obsolescence topics, guidance on the causes of obsolescence and the relationship between obsolescence and lifecycles.
b) G0043B Obsolescence management - Guidance on obsolescence management, assessing obsolescence risk, resolving obsolescence issues and managing the supply chain.
c) G0043C Further obsolescence guidance - Guidance on specific obsolescence issues including software.
The aim of this suite of documents is to provide an initial point of reference for LU and Transport for London (TfL) staff to enable them to:
a) Enhance their knowledge of obsolescence and obsolescence management
b) Understand current obsolescence management best practice
c) Make initial judgments in assessing the obsolescence risk of an asset
d) Understand what activities need to be taken to minimise the risk of obsolescence
e) Understand what actions can be taken in the event of an obsolescence issue impacting an asset.
Purpose
The purpose of this document is to define obsolescence, identify the causes of obsolescence and describe the relationship between obsolescence and part/component and asset lifecycles.
The objective of the guidance is to familiarise anyone who is either interested in or responsible for obsolescence management with the methodologies and strategies required to effectively support an asset throughout its lifecycle.
This guidance supports the LU Obsolescence Management standard S1043
