This guidance applies to standby duties carried out by Lifts, Escalators & Pumps staff.

This guidance is to ensure a safe system of work is put in place by any lift, escalator or pump engineers required to do any stand by duties on London Underground stations.

Purpose

The purpose of this guidance is to outline the responsibilities of an escalator competent person when providing support to, station works, etc. These services may include:

• escalator anchoring

• removal of the escalator from passenger service

• return of the escalator to passenger service

Provision of these services is referred to as standby duties.
