This module outlines the situations, process and controls needed where Functionally Equivalent Design methods can be employed.

The type of work covered includes:

a) Those of a Functionally Equivalent nature, as defined within this standard.

b) Campaign changes.

c) Temporary works

d) Emergency works.

e) Addition of non-intrusive event recording and condition monitoring,

f) Recovery of redundant trackside assets.

g) Minor Controlled Changes Register.

The module also covers the competencies and responsibilities required to undertake Functionally Equivalent Design and the controls that are required not only to ensure that designs are robust but also that suitable infrastructure records are maintained. 

Purpose 

This module defines design production and management process for situations where minor alterations and renewals are required to be carried out on the existing commissioned signalling infrastructure that do not introduce any new functionality to the signalling system. 

By following this process and controls, personnel undertaking Functionally Equivalent Design will not be compromising the safety and integrity of the signalling infrastructure and will be creating adequate records in order that the infrastructure can be correctly maintained.
