The scope of the Level Crossing Infrastructure (Inspection & Maintenance) Handbook extends to all level crossing installations of the follwoing types, and includes all engineering disciplines associated with such crossings;

• Automatic Half Barrier Crossings,

• Automatic Half Barrier Crossings Locally Monitored,

• Automatic Open Crossings Locally Monitored (including OCFLs),

• Automatic Open Crossings Remotely Monitored,

• Miniature Stop / Warning Lights,

• Manually Controlled Barriers,

• Traincrew Operated Crossings,

• Manned Gated Level Crossings,

• Open Crossings,

• User Worked Crossings,

• Footpath and Bridleway Crossings,

• Station Barrow Crossings.

Purpose

This Code of Practice describes the processes to be followed for the maintenance management of operational level crossing infrastructure and the inspection regime required to ensure level crossing systems are safe, reliable and legally compliant.

The processes described are designed to augment, but not replace, the existing maintenance processes and procedures mandated by the appropriate Professional Heads.
