OBJECTIVES AND SCOPE

The objective of this committee has been to update the previous versions of this publication, summarizing the state-of-the-practice for the design of cast-in-place anchors, welded anchors, and post-installed anchors as used in petrochemical and other industrial facilities.

The specific objectives were to

1. Present petrochemical and other industrial facilities anchorage design methods for tension and shear transfer into concrete with reinforcement and other embedments;

2. Summarize anchorage materials and properties;

3. Present current practices for fabrication and installation of anchorage;

4. Present recommendations for post-installed anchors;

5. Make comprehensive recommendations for cast-in-place anchor design, which are appropriate for use in petrochemical and other industrial facilities;

6. Present recommended constructability and repair practices.

The committee recognizes that, although several different types of anchorage systems are used in petrochemical and other industrial facilities, the most common include the following components: cast-in-place anchors, welded anchors, post-installed anchors, grout pockets, and shear lugs. Anchors themselves may include threaded bolts, nonthreaded studs, rods, rebars, embedments, and other structural shapes. The focus of this book is on the most common of these: threaded bolts typically fabricated from various steel grades with or without embedded heads, washers, sleeves, and wedges. The committee limited its investigation and recommendations to these common types. This self-imposed limit should not be construed as an attempt to limit the importance of other types of anchorage systems. Instead, this limit allowed the committee to focus attention on the most commonly used devices.
