Introduction, Purpose, and Audience

This document provides a technical guideline on couplings used in pump applications. It provides a basic understanding of the various coupling types, information required to make basic coupling selections based on system requirements, and a general understanding of the installation and maintenance practices associated with each type of coupling.

While several coupling types may meet the technical requirements of an application, the final selection is often made based on a variety of other factors, such as ease of replacement, system mean time between replacement (MTBR) requirements, and coupling inventory consolidation.

This document does not provide a single coupling recommendation for an application, but it does narrow the field of products that can be selected based on application requirements. For specific recommendations, consult the manufacturer for additional guidance.

This document is intended for those responsible for maintaining or selecting couplings, including rotating machinery maintenance personnel and those responsible for designing or specifying pump systems.
