Purpose/Material Description.

A material defined by this specification is used to cover a hole in a vehicle body and applied to electrocoated or painted metal surfaces and must not cause any corrosion to these surfaces. This material will have an anatomy consisting of three (3) parts: a substrate/backing, a pressure sensitive adhesive, and a release liner. The backing or substrate material may include, but is not limited to, polymeric films (i.e., Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), Polyethylene (PE), Polyurethane (PU), etc.), foil, cotton, or other cloth. When applied correctly with the recommended overlap, the hole covering tape must have both the ability to resist puncture trauma and creep, as well as act as a water sealant during common and high-intensity environments encountered in an automotive application (temperature, moisture, and ultraviolet (UV)).

The material must adhere to all approved production electrocoat (e-coat).

It must not have corrosion causing ingredients.

Symbols.

Not applicable.

Applicability.

These tapes are installed to the body manually or robotically in the paint shop or in General Assembly (GA).

Remarks.

This specification details the material and performance requirements of a tape used to cover a drain hole preventing water, dust, or air intrusion. Tape should be able to meet performance requirements after exposure to paint shop sealer/primer bake, and up to 4 topcoat reprocess bakes. Tape also can be applied in General Assembly without bake. It must adhere to electrocoated metal. Tapes are expected to meet both High Bake and Low Bake requirements. Material must show no sign of trapped air from either an external observation or a sectional view before and after curing. Tapes will be presented in two (2) Types, see Table 1. Table 2 shows Tape Backing Material.
