Guidelines for the Design and Application of Speed Humps and Speed Tables

inactive
Organization: ITE
Publication Date: 1 September 2011
Status: inactive
scope:

This recommended practice provides guidelines for the design and application of speed humps and speed tables, defined as a roadway geometric design feature whose primary purpose is to reduce the speed of vehicles traveling along a roadway. The experiences of various agencies currently implementing speed humps and speed tables across North America are documented, along with findings from published research work. The order of information provided in this report follows the order of the recommended speed hump/speed table process. That is, it is recommended that prior to speed hump/speed table implementation, agencies review the full range of considerations and understand the potential effectiveness of speed humps/speed tables (Chapter 2); develop and follow a formal public consultation process (Chapter 3); design each speed hump/speed table installation specific to the needs of the street or neighborhood while maintaining consistency within the jurisdiction (Chapter 4); construct and maintain speed humps/speed tables (Chapter 5); monitor and evaluate speed hump/speed table effectiveness (Chapter 6); and be aware of other key considerations, such as liability and enforcement (Chapter 7). This report replaces the proposed recommended practice that was published in July 2007.
